“sofia koutsovitis group is grounded in the percussive revolutions of traditional south american rhythms like the chacarera and zamba from argentina, afro-peruvian festejo and lando and various brazilian genres. alternately singing in spanish, portuguese and english, sofia’s voice here seems to simultaneously employ stylistic codes drawn from multiple sources, bouncing them off her original compositions or select material by eminent musical poets such as silvio rodriguez, astor piazzolla, paulinho da viola and raul carnota. and far from settling from the monolithic familiarity of standard orchestrational conventions, this ensemble puts forth a textural range that’s as diverse as the home addresses of its international cast of members would suggest. thus perhaps the only thing predictable remains its leader’s search for change and surprise- a sonic discovery leading the listener to a very different place in each song.”
