The Troglodytes (Andrew Bergmann, Tyler Wood, and a Spinal Tapish succession of drummers) emerge from their holes to present their second performance since last June’s swing around their old stomp, the Netherlands. Tyler and Andrew are hard at work on the Trogs’ second Floating Opera Records album, Ria, and are joined tonight- in his Troglodyte debut- by drummer Ziv Ravitz. Andrew has resolved to write some new songs. Some of them might involve his anxiety concerning his upcoming sleep deprivation study/bloodletting/cash cow.

Planet Earth is the vehicle of sax player Jeremy Udden. Last time they played some originals and songs from Sun Ra, Stereolab, and Eliot Krimsky. Their music is as peaceful and grounded as their name might suggest. A doubleheader for Ziv.

To benefit Tsumani Relief Efforts

Rasa, a new collaboration between saxophonist Pat Donaher and Richie
Barshay, will make its debut at the Zeitgeist Gallery on Thursday December
9. From the Sanskrit which loosely translates as the energetic ³juice² of
any fruit or experience, Rasa seeks that directness and excitement in all of
the music it creates. Jordan Scanella will play bass, and other players
will be announced shortly. All proceeds of the show, including CD sales,
will be given to the tsunami relief efforts in South Asia.

This project continues the collaboration between Barshay, currently drummer
for the great Herbie Hancock¹s Gershwin¹s World project and upcoming new
quartet, and Donaher, the local saxophonist and composer who Cadence
magazine calls ³a talent worth watching². The two met three years ago at
New England Conservatory, and have collaborated on both large and small
group projects. The music draws on all their interests, particularly in
exploring the convergence of different rhythmic traditions- jazz, latin,
Indian, pop, and classical.

JazzTimes called his music “honest, frequently surprising and consistently exciting,” and AllAboutJazz-New York’s David R. Adler noted, “Newer releases evidence that Musillami has come into his own…he is producing some of today’s finest music within a developing group format.”

His all-star trio, featuring bassist Joe Fonda (Fonda/Stevens Group, Conference Call, Anthony Braxton) and drummer George Schuller (Conference Call, Ballin’ the Jack, Lee Konitz Trio), made its recorded debut on May 2003’s Beijing (Playscape PSR #J121802), and recently returned from a nine-city tour of Austria and Germany in November. Metazoa is a collective of improvising musicians from Canada, Norway and Sweden and is appearing for the first time in the US February 6. The musicians are sensitive improvisers and have appeared in many different constellations throughout Europe, notably with Louis Sclavis, Bobo Stenson and Ståle Storløkken. Attempting to erase the boundaries between contemporary chamber music and improvised music, Metazoa will show the audience a unique and sensitive way of communicating musically.

Toshi Makihara is one of the major voices in Philadelphia’s New Music scene today. As an aspiring youth, Makihara studied drums, percussion and improvisation with Sabu Toyozumi, a prominent percussionist in Tokyo. Since arriving in the United States in late 1970s’ he has worked with various new music ensembles as well as with numerous dance and theater companies internationally. Makihara has provided original music to Arden Theater Company, Diversions Dance Company (Wales), Pennsylvania Ballet, ZeroMoving Dance Company and Leah Stein Dance Company among others, and has worked with musicians including Steve Beresford, Peter Brotzmann, John Butcher, Nels Cline, Eugene Chadbourne, Tom Cora, Amy Denio, Thurston Moore, William Parker and John Zorn. He has also collaborated with poets, visual artists, filmmakers and performance artists widely.

Since the fall of 2000, Makihara has been focusing on two separate performing styles: 1. New Jazz performances on a conventional drum-set, and 2. the “One Drum + One Cymbal” setting for his experimental free improvised music programs.

Makihara’s recordings include Grammy nominated “Another Shining Path” (1998 Drimala Records) in trio with Gary Hassay (alto saxophone) and William Parker (bass), and “Hurricane Floyd” (Spring 2000, Sublingual Records) in trio with Thurston Moore (guitar) and Wally Shoup (alto sax).

John Voigt - bass. He has sessioned, gigged, or recorded with Billy Bang, Borah Bergman, Peter Brotzmann, Roy Campbell Jr., Denis Charles, Marilyn Crispell, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Dixon, Paul Flaherty, Bill Frisell, Malcolm Goldstein, Khan Jamal, Joseph Jarman, Keith Jarrett, Oliver Lake, Jeanne Lee, Joe McPhee, Jemeel Moondoc, Thurston Moore, Joe Morris, Lawrence “Butch” Morris, Paul Motian, Bern Nix, and Steve Swell. He is documented on Aum Fidelity, Ayler, Eremite, Box Holder, and RRRecords (a video with Thurston Moore). In New York he has played many Vision Festivals, the Sound Unity Festival, The Half Note, La Mama, St. Peters Church, Jazz Gallery, CBGB’s, Tonic, many Knitting Factory gigs.

Rooted in the language of his teachers Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor, Paul Bley, Lowell Davidson and many others, his style is marked by his relationship to the trap set drums, varying densities of sound masses and melodies spanning the whole keyboard with a surprising variety of touches, dynamics, phrasing, and silence. There is also an arresting balance between the pedaled and unpedaled sounds. Eric Zinman has played with Craig Schildhauer, Raqib Hassan, Sabir Mateen, Marco Eneidi, Lisle Ellis, Peter Valsamis, Tatsuya Nakatani,Glynis Lomon and Blaise Siwula, John Voigt and Laurence Cook. Nick Castro is a psychedelic folk musician from California. Something of a self-taught musicologist, Nick began studying music at a young age. This show will feature Otto Hauser of Espers on Percussion and Guitar.

Feathers: An 8-piece mystical folk group from the Northampton and Brattleboro areas which draw comparisons to Incredible String Band and Forest if both bands played at the same time. Songwriting and orchestration which are mind-blowing to witness live.

Feathers also feature the amazing songwriting talents of Asa Irons who has a solo LP out on Swaanjaleif Records.

Ameranouche!!!, a gypsy jazz trio from New Hampshire bring their hot acoustic swing music to the Zeitgeist Gallery. The trio, led by virtuoso guitarist Richard “Shepp” Sheppard, plays a mix of fast and slow standards and original compositions in the style of Django Reinhardt and the gypsies of Europe.

The genre of Gypsy Jazz began when Belgian-born guitarist Django Reinhardt fused the French waltzes and traditional European gypsy music of the 1920s with the new sounds of Louis Armstrong. The result is a style that makes use of breakneck tempos, swinging rhythms, flashy guitar tricks, and a take-no-prisoners style. This music, even in the delicate delivery of a haunting ballad, generates excitement and enthusiasm.

“Shepp,” as he likes to be called, is a veteran player who has shared the stage with the likes of Hot Tuna, Vassar Clements, John Jorgenson, and Weird Al Yankovich. His playing is at once fiery and engaging, but he makes that which seems impossible look easy. The members of Ameranouche!!! share with each other and with the audience a deep passion for this music.

Cat Show Snapshots is a new assemblage of improvisers with a commitment to interweaving melodic lines and textures in an exploratory but accessible (and subtle) way. Featuring compositions by saxophonist Adam Schneit that range from “free” to rock-like melodies, in addition to covers of the Keith Jarrett American Quartet and the Velvet Undergound, the band is most concerned with using simple materials as the basis for uplifting improvisations. “I like the analogy of a snapshot,” says Schneit, who admits the name was just a few words he saw together on the internet. “Something that conveys what’s really true, instantaneously and with a certain economy. And I like cats. They’re cute.”

Saturday and Sunday Feb 19th and 20th all day both days

Why celebrate the voice? Each one is unique. This is a fundraising event which will pay for upgrades and repairs to the PA system necessary to bring the voice to your ears, with less pollution (reduced buzzing, crackling, and crunching and the exhaust is only water and CO2), and more accurately, proper equalization and better microphones. Oh yeah, and buying monitors so that singers can hear themselves. This event will be recorded, and thus your applause forever documented.

Vardan Ovsepian – Piano Solo

Vardan Ovsepian (www.vardanovsepian.com), an Armenia-born pianist/composer and a “Fresh Sound – New Talent” recording artist, will appear at the Zeitgeist Gallery in Cambridge on Sunday, February 27, at 7:00pm. After the last two recordings and a number of successful performances with his quartet, Vardan has decided to turn his focus once again to his solo work. At this concert, Vardan is going to showcase his new ideas and experiments employing the “mirror effect” in music.

About The Artist

Vardan Ovsepian has received classical and jazz training at the conservatories in Armenia, Estonia, Finland and, most recently, at the Berklee College of Music in Boston MA. Vardan currently teaches at the Musical Suite in Newburyport, MA and performs extensively, both solo and with his quartet in New England. Vardan has released three CDs with a Barcelona–based label “Fresh Sound – New Talent” (www.freshsoundrecords.com). In September 2001, the label launched the artist with a solo piano CD “Abandoned Wheel”. A year later, Fresh Sound invited Vardan to bring his quartet for a recording of the CD “Sketch Book” with a special guest Mick Goodrick, and in 2004 to record his third CD “Akunc” featuring a Polish cellist Agnieszka Dziubak. All records are available at all major music retailers.

Vardan’s innovative style has been well recognized in the jazz scene. “He is a singular musician that is developing a highly personal and sophisticated expression, and is one of the few musicians of his generation that will help define the future course of jazz”, said Frank Carlberg, Finish-born pianist/composer and the First Prize winner of the Hennessey Jazz Search.

In a interview with Mike Brannon of JazzReview.com Brad Mehldau sited Vardan as one of the promising new musicians: “…once a year or so, I hear someone new and I think, ‘This person will have a life in music that will affect other musicians and touch a lot of people.’ I’ve heard several pianists on recordings that I really dig lately, ones who are for now as of yet off the radar. There’s a pianist out of Boston who made a beautiful record for the Fresh Sound label called “Sketch Book”; his name is Vardan Ovsepian.”
