Brian Michael Roff & the Deer
Raymond Morin
Jeffrey Simmons and the Symptoms.
Brian Michael Roff performs songs that appear upon first listen to be merely sketches of situations and common emotions, but further examination reveals his work as the middle-class koans of a sharp-eyed social observer. Think Randy Newman burning down the Barnes & Noble rather than the cornfield and you’re getting close. The Deer, led by Jim Reynolds on lead guitar and banjo, throws gasoline on the fire.
Raymond Morin writes mysterious songs that read something like a Flannery O’Conner story shattered into a fragmentary Cummings poem, left for you to reassemble. His unique voice is backed by fingerpicked guitar reminiscent of British folksters like Bert Jansch and John Renbourn.
Jeffrey Simmons & the Symptoms draw from a deep well of post-Watergate rock n roll stylings and general sense of fagged-out teenage ennui…in Symptoms land, it’s always Miller Time, Gram Parsons is on the dollar bill, and Alex Chilton’s on the twenty.
