New Jewish Music, a concept growing out of the Klezmer revival, is gaining
much popularity throughout the world music scene in America and Europe. At
the forefront of the scene is the Boston based KHEVRE. While one of the
newer bands, in their young existence, they have already gained critical
acclaim for their performances throughout the country. “Khevre is
redefining the edges of New Yiddish Music,” says critic Ari Davidow, on
Khevre’s performance at the historic Regent Theater in Arlington,
Massachusetts.
Musical vocabulary is what gives KHEVRE their unique and original sound.
While all of the musicians in the ensemble have an incredible knowledge of
music spanning the globe, it is how they craft those styles, of jazz, Latin,
middle eastern, American, and of course, European music together, that
produce something special and exceptional. KHEVRE has played concerts at
Tonic in New York City, Lefrak Concert Hall in Queens, the Richmond County
Baseball Stadium in Staten Island, the National Yiddish Book Center in
Amherst, The Regent Theater in Arlington, and many others, along with
countless radio performances.
Klezmer is the Eastern European folk music of the Jewish people. It came
over to America in the early 19th century, and became a part of American
Jewish life. An unexpected revival to learn this music of the past came
about in the 1980’s, continuing through today. While the past holds the
tradition on which KHEVRE basses their creativity, it is the future where
they see this music flourishing. Their debut album, Oyfn Sheydveg: At the
Crossroads, features new, Yiddish repetoire, recomposed Jewish songs, and
traditional klezmer music.
