Cirque Du Singe Brisé returns this coming Friday September 24th at the
Zeitgeist Gallery with what will be one special and amazing evening.
Headlining this month’s show will be the up-and-coming singer/songwriter
Gregory Douglass and making a very special appearance we have the urban poet
William James Austin giving us a taste of his domain with readings from his
award-winning Underworld series. Also joining us will be Lisa Bastoni, Rick
Berlin, Ben Blanchard, Rod Webber and our ringleader Matt Ferrel, along with
presentations of shorts from Mass Art video artists.
Gregory Douglass is the perfect type of artist to anchor our monthly
presentations. At 22, this Burlington, VT native, is already a journeyman
performer that has toured with They Might Be Giants and has co-billed with
the likes of Tracy Chapman, Third Eye Blind and Martin Sexton. He was also
was the winner of 2003’s Grammyfest and has become a bit of a Club Passim
regular opening for numerous national acts. Gregory will be performing solo
in support of his fourth self-released album Pseudo-Rotary.
William James Austin is a well accomplished internationally renowned poet
that has gained fame for his, to date, eight volume, Underworld series.
Austin’s first two Underworld books were published by Cambridge’s own S
Press, from which his poem “Topless,” a work based on Austin jumping into
the mind of a female stripper, won him an Alan Ginsberg award. Austin has
also been a Guggenheim nominee and twice nominated for a Pushcart. He has
also done readings of his work for the BBC. This thoroughbred New Yorker is
now published through Koja Press, a small and respected publishing company
that only works with abstract minds. Austin will be appearing at the Circus
in support of his newest release Underworld 7&8: Transtextual.
To be involved with the Cambridge/Boston music scene and have not heard of
Lisa Bastoni is almost impossible. This go-getter can easily be found
performing somewhere, whether it be a venue, subway, street corner or bus
stop. Lisa’s uplifting voice and mellow folk appeal have gained her loads of
recent positive press from the likes of The Boston Globe, Herald, Northeast
Performer and many other regional publications. She will be performing in
support of her self-released album Your First Sweetheart. The respected
veteran of this month’s show will clearly be Rick Berlin. Rick has a history
of a true eclectic great and is looking very forward to be playing his
beatnik style of songwriting on the Zeitgeist’s grand piano. Lookout for his
soon to be released CD Me & Van Gogh.
Of course Rod Webber will be present at this month’s Circus, it’s simply not
a circus without him. Rod has proudly been selected to be a semi-finalist in
this year’s MOVA songwriting competition. One of his great new songs “See
You Around Some Time” earned him this honor and he will be performing it
during the MOVA Arts Conference in Alabama in hopes of advancing to the
finals. We will find out about his success shortly before our show.
Ben Blanchard, one fantastic new voice, will also be joining us this month
and is he ever a name to lookout for. He gave me his CD, Barely Fly, at our
last presentation and I just had to have him on ASAP. Once again Matt Ferrel
will be on board as our ring leader for the night and bringing us some of
his cool, gritty material. Yeah, I’m looking forward to the 24th , hopefully
you all are too. A Cirque Du Singe Brisé comp of all our performers will
soon be sent your way and select members of the press will be receiving
William James Austin’s newest Underworld installment. Other books will be
available upon request.
Cirque Du Singe Brisé (Circus of the Shattered Monkey) is a monthly showcase
of acoustic and eclectic talent held regularly on the last Friday of every
month @ the Zeitgeist Gallery. We are always looking for new faces to take
part in this event and anyone who is interested should email
ra_vanvleet@yahoo.com. Any members of the press or media that have
particular eclectic favorites are more than welcomed to pass on any
recommendations.
