BURTON GREEN / ROY CAMPBELL QUINTET
Burton Green – piano (Mark Dresser)
Roy Campbell – trumpet (William Parker)
Lou Grassi – drums
Adam Lane – bass (Tom Waits)

The main idea of the Burton Greene / Roy Campbell Quartet is that in creative, improvised music there is no “isms”. Whether we play “inside” or “outside” conventional structures, creativity and quality is the Thing. Reviewer Derek Taylor in a recent issue of All About Jazz writes “Burton Greene ranks as one of the seasoned survivors in creative improvised music. Like a handful of his ESP (Records) peers he’s still at it after all these years, plugging away at his craft and creating chameleonic music along the way… Greene sounds great as well, foraging over the finely tuned ivories with a self-assurance and acuity ideally suited to the auspicious surroundings.” (from review of CIMP duo recording with bassist Mark Dresser: “Peace Beyond Conflict”.)Burton has been on the avant improvised scene since it’s beginnings in the early ‘60’s. His music is to be found on more than 40 recordings.

Roy Campbell has also been active many years and is easily one of the most sought after trumpet players of the downtown New York scene. His own Pyramid Trio with bassist William Parker tours and records extensively in the US and Europe.

“Trumpeter Roy Campbell’s approach is to swallow all musical concepts, converting ‘world music’ into one music. His playing can emanate pure improvisation, as with the quartet Other Dimensions in Music, and the trumpeter can also maintain that improvisational touch in the large band of William Parker. Campbell’s trumpet comes with the lyricism of Freddie Hubbard, the freedom of Albert Ayler, and the worldliness of Don Cherry. ” ~ Mark Corroto, “All About Jazz”

Lou Grassi fits perfectly in the group concept of “chameleonic” music. He’s the journeyman drummer on many CIMP recordings and has worked often in the past with both Burton and Roy. Lou can be heard swinging or pulsing anything from the most conservative New Orleans to radical avant garde styles. “Grassi has an incredible talent for setting up a percussive environment that things can grow in. Like some jazz farmer he piles on a rich texture of fertilizer, creating a mulch for this bumper crop of colour, humour and variety… Grassi is as much polyatmospheric as he is polyrhythmic”. Nathan Thompson, Opprobrium (New Zealand)

Bassist, composer Adam Lane (33) is the youngest player and most recent welcome addition to the quartet. Combining influences from Duke Ellington, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Melt Banana, Adam Lane stretches the terms “jazz” and “chamber Music” beyond convention. His blend of music and performance art takes listeners on a meticulously orchestrated joyride, with horns, strings, electronics, spoken word, etc. As a composer he has been recognized by critics world wide as “innovative” (Signal to Noise) and “forward thinking,” (Jazziz) and as a player he has contributed to important new recordings by artists such as John Tchicai and Tom Waits.
