CHRISTOPHER JON BROKAW was born august 1, 1964, in new york city. he began playing guitar at age 12 and drums at 13 (mentored by father kurt, a stellar bebop drummer). chris attended oberlin college, received a b.a. in english, and moved to boston, massachusetts.

chris’ recording career began in full earnest in 1990 with the new york-based trio CODEINE, with whom chris drummed and played some guitar on two lp’s for subpop records. in 1992, chris defected to pursue full-time guitar and songwriting duties for boston-based band COME, who between 1991 and 2001 released four albums and several eps’s on matador and toured extensively.

around 1995 chris began playing with several other artists. he contributed guitar to tracks by cleveland’s COBRA VERDE and gijon, spain’s MANTA RAY, and drums to a mini lp by former bullet lavolta mastermind corey loog brennan’s LOOG. he also began a fruitful relationship with new york singer/guitarist STEVE WYNN, with whom he recorded several cd’s and toured extensively through 2000. in 1997 he formed PULLMAN with bundy k brown (ex-tortoise, bastro), doug mccombs (tortoise, brokeback, 11th dream day) and curtis harvey (ex-rex, letter e), and recorded two cd’s for thrill jockey. in 1998 he formed THE NEW YEAR with matt and bubba kadane (both ex-bedhead) and mike donofrio, and recorded one lp for touch and go. chris has also recently contributed to recordings by THALIA ZEDEK, THE WILLARD GRANT CONSPIRACY, ROSA CHANCE WELL and MOLASSES.

in october 2001 chris released his solo debut, a split e.p. on kimchee/acuarela records with gijon’s viva las vegas. june 2002 saw the release of his full-length solo debut, “red cities,” on atavistic in the US and 12XU in europe and the UK.
following the release of “red cities”, chris toured solo throughout the US, canada, europe and the UK with the likes of mogwai, joan of arc, rebecca gates, j mascis, low, bob mould, bettie serveert, califone, evan dando and brokeback. in january 2003 he joined with the empty house cooperative on a collaboration with playwrite rinde eckert on his new opera “highway ulysses” at the american repertory theatre in cambridge. shortly thereafter he recorded and released the solo acoustic cd “wandering as water”, as well as the 2nd consonant lp “love and affliction”. 2003 saw more touring solo as well as accompanying evan dando.

2004 will see the release of chris’ new ep “my confidante + 3”, the new year’s 2nd lp “the end is near”, a new lp by the empty house cooperative, and roddy bogawa’s film “i was born, but . . .” featuring a soundtrack of new material by chris. http://www.chrisbrokaw.com
