Reefer Madness was one of the more popular Zampano screenings last year, so we’ll follow up this month with a sister film from the same era. Assassins of Youth took its title and much of its over-the-top drug scare rhetoric from the pen of prohibition moralist Harry Anslinger, who described the scourge of cannabis potentially destroying a rising generation of fresh-faced young Americans. One Production Code reviewer of the film commented, “In my opinion, this is a tawdry, poorly done feature which should not be shown on any screen. It is the worst picture I have seen since I have been on Code work. Moral value, none,; Direction, poor; Acting, terrible.” Nevertheless, we will disgrace the Zeitgeist Gallery and our immediate community by screening this film in delirious 16mm, along with a cartoon short from the period.
