9:30 – Midnite
Claudia Solal

Claudia has gained national acclaim over the past seven years for her very
personal style of singing, in which a phrase might initially sound like
Sarah Vaughan, and slowly develop into a high-pitched multiphonic wail…
She has mastered the tradition of jazz while maintaining a freedom that
allows her to go anywhere she pleases, on the simplest or most complicated
of tunes. Here are a couple of quotes from top French jazz critics:
“Claudia sings like no one. I mean that no reference, no model comes to mind
when we listen to her, and that it is with an unencumbered ear that we
appreciate her work. Her work, in fact, must have been intense and profound,
for her to be so at ease with intervals and rhythms which most vocalists
avoid like the plague… [She is] a priceless talent, perfectly controlled,
expressing herself with the same ease and conviction on both well-known
tunes and completely original subjects…”
CLAUDE CARRIERE (Radio France - France Musiques)
“One of the most original vocalists of the contemporary jazz scene.”
ALAIN GERBER (Jazz Magazine France)
She has performed with many top jazz musicians, including Archie Shepp,
Manuel Rocheman, François Moutin, Baptiste Trotignon (now the pianist for
Moutin Reunion in New York), and her father Martial Solal.
Here she is joined by pianist Dan Tepfer, a recent arrival in Boston, now
studying with Danilo Perez and Bob Brookmeyer at the New England
Conservatory. Dan was semifinalist of the latest International Martial Solal
Jazz Piano Competition in Paris, and similarly to Claudia, cultivates his
musical freedom. Their duo should yield some very dramatic results.
