“100 Weaves of India” is a unique exhibition and sale of a variety of weaves
and embroideries from India. Rare, antique and contemporary pieces from all
the different regions of India will be on display. Several of these weaves
and embroideries embody centuries old craft traditions through which rural
and tribal artisan communities have earned their livelihood. Many of these
traditions are now endangered. This is a unique opportunity to learn about
the rich history and techniques of these textile crafts. Support endangered
art forms.
A portion of the proceeds received from this exhibit will help support these
endangered artists and their art form through FIRE: Funding Indian Rural
Enterprise (
www.projectfire.org). FIRE is an association dedicated to
providing a support network to poor rural artisans in India. Over 500
pattern varieties exist in India in the form of weaves, embroideries, print
and textile-related arts. The textiles on display are
handpicked by the organizers and will include contemporary Jammawar shawls,
painted silk, brilliantly hued embroideries, tribal designs, silk rugs, home
decor items and temple saris, among other pieces. The exhibition will
feature a range of both modern and affordable fabrics, as well as
traditional and vintage pieces. Many are from villages in India, a few from
retail stores and many from personal collections. They are all unique and
authentic. Many of these pieces are used by tribes or weavers and bought
from village markets and homes in India.
“100 Weaves of India” is sponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council,
The Brookline Rotary, Brookline Commission of the Arts and One World
Cuisine. (For some of the time, the exhibit will also be running
concurrently at the Brookline Arts Center, Oct 7-Nov 16, 2003.)
