organized by Gill Aharon
The Zeitgeist Second Annual Piano Festival, organized by the Zeitgeist
Gallery’s resident pianist Gill Aharon, celebrates Boston’s piano culture
and the Zeitgeist’s key role in fostering and sustaining that culture. The
gallery, hailed as the center for improvised music in Boston, has excellent
acoustics. And Aharon’s beautiful 7’ grand piano is a beautiful part of the
gallery’s aural and visual landscape. The piano, though not always an event
focus, is ever present. The PianoFest, the gallery’s second annual showcase
for various local piano talents and styles, shines a thirteen-hour spotlight
right onto this heart of the Gallery’s bea(s)t!
Gill Aharon, who will be sound recording the entire event, envisions the
PianoFest as collaborating across genres. He is providing an opportunity for
pianists with “desperately different styles” to find their commonality while
celebrating their differences. As of this writing*, the extremes and
in-betweens will be covered by David Maxwell, Greg Burk, Vardan Ovsepian,
Gabriel Guererro, Malone’s Trio, Joe Della Penna, Bob Toabe, Daniel Blake, John
McDonald, Dan DeChellis, Manisha Shahane, Steve Lantner, Kobi Arad, Jaques
Chanier, Gill Aharon, Daniela Schaechter, Thomas Luther, Dean Marcellana,
Hans Poppel, Gordon Beeferman and Michael McLaughlin. And in keeping with
this spirit of disparate collaboration within a gallery setting, visual
artist Kristen Mills will paint throughout the evening performances.
Aharon has structured the PianoFest to appeal to all different ages and
tastes. The music will have more of an “inside” feel earlier in the day,
moving on to more “outside” sounds as the day progresses, then later turning
back “in” on itself, before it finally leads back “out” in the wee hours. A
festival pass, which will also serve as a discount food coupon at the
neighboring Druid Pub, will allow the audience to do their own dropping in
and out of the Gallery as well.
[*Updates for specific performers and times will be posted on the Zeitgeist
Gallery’s website.]
