Why is the Z different from all other venues?

Because when approached by a group of improvisers consisting of two double bases and a percussionist, it says Drum n Bass n Bass, why not?

Come hear the next rage: Jane Wang, Mike Bullock, and Grant Smith.

Grant Smith studied drumset with Alan Dawson, Arabic drums with Jamie Haddad, tabla with Kazi Jalal, Afro-Cuban percussion with Enrique Pla, and Handance with Glen Velez. The Boston Globe calls him a “brilliant improviser.” The Boston Phoenix has noted his topflight “cross-genre ” abilities.

Grant has performed on many stages from Radio City, Wolf Trap, and Tanglewood, to the Hollywood Bowl, MU in Budapest, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. But Z’s the best.

Jane Wang, composer/musician based in Boston/New York, has toured in Yugoslavia, Hungary, Japan, Sweden, Haiti. She may be heard on numerous recordings and co-owns Hao Records (more details at www.haorecords.com). Jane composed/performed several solo bass/vocal pieces for the artist Hanne Tierney at international festivals including Ms. Tierney’s Obie-award winning Salome (with Sabir Mateen). Jane frequently collaborates with movement artists, most recently at the Ludwig Museum and Mu Theater in Budapest, Hungary thru an Artslink 2002 grant with dancer Liz Roncka and multipercussionist Grant Smith and at Autumn Uprising 6 and Mobius 25 with the addition of movement artist Olivier Besson. She has composed chamber pieces for and is a member of the new music group Human Connection. She studied composition with Joe Maneri. Recent stints include organist/choir director for a little New Enlgand church, bass for the Haitian band Segwe, bass for a latin band and music for actress/playwright Renita Martin.

Mike Bullock plays bass. He also plays tone generators, tuning forks, and feedback. He has played in a medieval chapel in France, on a Brooklyn rooftop, and in a warehouse in Wichita. In October 2003 he embarks on a month-long tour of California, Texas, France and the Netherlands. Bullock is the founder of Chloλ, a label dedicated to experimental and improvised music. He has also recorded for Grob, CIMP, Emanem, Intransitive and Rounder.
