Daniel Blake
Versatile saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist and composer Daniel Blake has performed in New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, the Boston Jazz Society’s annual outdoor festival, and Ryles Jazz Club. Mr. Blake has performed with Mulgrew Miller, Danílo Perez, Claudio Ragazzi, Oscar Stagnaro, and Phil Markowitz.

As a recording artist, Mr. Blake has appeared on two albums with the Boston-based jazz fusion quartet Ellipsis released by Telepathyrecords. Mr. Blake records and performs with Jean-Marc Boutin’s Paris-based X-Tet, as well as an ongoing duo project with percussionist Stèphane Rougier. Mr. Blake also studied and performed Arabic music with internationally reknowned Algerian oudist Samir Tahar.

Danílo Perez has said, “[Daniel Blake] is committed to doing justice to any musical situation.” Although he has performed in a wide variety of musical environments, Mr. Blake is constantly striving to blend these seemingly disparate styles into one over-arching musical statement that will create a bold yet honest musical statement. Blake is currently performing around the Boston area in several formats. The avant-guarde trio The Onerous Three explores improvisation through two strong melodic voices, held together by percussive elements freed from the traditional role of “perpetual” timekeeper. Blake’s other two quartets, Surca and Breath of Out explore sounds that combine music from the jazz, latin, and avant-guarde tradition, but explore what is new to the musicians.

Daniel Blake is currently completing an undergraduate double degree in Jazz Saxophone Performance at the New England Conservatory and in Child Development at Tufts University. He has studied privately with Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Bob Moses, Carl Atkins, and Steve Lacy.
