THE SKETCHPAD

a.i.m. (advanced idea mechanics), launched in 2002, is a freeform collective dedicated to the advancement of fringe independent music, and the deconstruction of the stagnant commercial mainstream. a.i.m. functions as a subsidiary of local independent label Telepathy Records, both overseen by Elio DeLuca. a.i.m. curates “the sketchpad” concert series, which highlights artists from a wide variety of marginalized sonic art forms, including noise, loop, ambient, IDM, free improv, and sonic dance. Having produced events at the old Zeitgeist Gallery, as well as other locations in greater Boston, a.i.m. is proud to return the sketchpad to its rightful home at the new Zeitgeist, on the first Sunday of every month.

ZAMPANO’S PLAYHOUSE
presents
“Jimi Hendrix at Berkeley”

This 1971 film of Jimi Hendrix’s Memorial Day 1970 concert in Berkeley captures him in what many consider some of his best performances, and if that isn’t enough, the footage of anti-war demonstrations going on at the time intercut with the live footage offer a powerful reminder of a time when anti-war protests had a revolutionary feel to them. Jimi’s “Star-Spangled Banner” is here, as an intro into a surging performance of “Purple Haze.” The film will be screened, as always in 16mm. . . but with the volume up louder than usual.

WHIMSY

Whimsy is an evening variety cabaret with a focus on the unconventional. We
usually have 8-10 acts in the two hour show, from bands to performance
artists, films, dance, poetry, wrestling, comedy…Whimsey is not open mic,
but its purpose is to give the oddest and most marginalized artists in the
community a voice and an audience so they can spread their weirdness and let
it be free and grow. We usually throw in a popular local band or two as
well.

JOHN JAGEL

“Visions & Images”

Recent Paintings and Drawings by John Jagel

Opening Reception: Saturday June 21st, 3-6pm

Show runs: June17th- July 6th

About the Artist

American visual artist John Jägel has an extensive career that spans over 40 years. For most of that time, his work has been primarily focused on nature scenes, nudes and portraits. However in 2001, a debilitating illness imposed on him a 6-month hiatus during which time he reconsidered his approach to his work. In an interview conducted this past February by Susie Davidson of the Cambridge Chronicle, Jägel proclaimed that “as with other artists, past and present, I have a passion for paint as paint, color as an important element expressive of emotion and its qualities to give the illusion of form and space. After all, painting an image on a flat surface is what it is all about, whether it is illusionistic or abstract. A revelation occurs each and every time I face a blank canvas. The task for me is to find the means, the language to create something from nothing; to gain a grip on a concept and follow it to resolution … While engaged in the pursuit of visual possibilities, I am often astounded by what occurs on the canvas. It’s as if I am an instrument of some higher power which points the way, a transcendent experience at times irrational and mysterious.” John Jägel now celebrates his personal transcendence in this solo exhibit at the Zeitgeist.

Don’t miss the premiere of this feature-length masterpiece by local luminary
Thomas Nola. The young mastermind demonstrates a wide array of talents; from
acting, puppetry and music to ingenius cinematography in this eclectic
extravanganza that is sure to warp your senses. In this full-sensory
assault, we witness trials and tribulations suffered by an unsuccessful
Astro-turf salesman as he is pulled into a malevolent alternate universe by
a seemingly harmless jack-in-the-box. Strange music and even stranger
visuals abound in this dreamlike visual tour-de-force. All this will be
