This evening’s performance is the first installment of a monthly summer
residency by the BSC at the Zeitgeist Gallery, presented by Non-Event. The
BSC was formed in 2000 by saxophonist Bhob Rainey. The musicians represent
the best of Boston’s electroacoustic improvisers, but the group is much more
than an all-star ensemble. Through unique rehearsal methods, Rainey brings
focus and compositional attention to the group’s improvisations, while
allowing each musician to have her/his own voice. There is no score or live
direction; instead, the group relies on a subtle understanding of its own
inner workings, combining consciousness of craft (many of these musicians
were working together long before this ensemble was formed) with a penchant
for pulling off risks. The result is richly textured, often transparent,
pregnant with surprise, and unafraid of extremes.
