RKM Music artist and Maine native Michael McGinnis will bring his
NYC-basedgroup to the Zeitgeist Gallery for an evening of original jazz music
performed by some of New York Cityís best young musicians. This
performanceis part of short tour the band is taking through New England. BetweenGreen was formed in the summer of 1998 by Michael McGinnis, with drummer
Mark Dodge who is a classmate of McGinnisí from USM. After a few years
ofperforming in NYCís jazz scene Between Green caught the ear of
saxophonistRavi Coltrane who was just starting up his own label called RKM Music.
The debut CD, ìTangentsî was the first release on RKM Music followed by two
releases by trumpeter Ralph Alessi.
Although Between Green has the standard instrumentation of saxophone,
trumpet, piano, bass, and drums, the personalities of each player and
the diversity of the compositions gives this group a sound that is anything
but standard. All of the compositions the group performs are composed by
Michael McGinnis whoís influences include jazz, classical, traditional
Irish music, traditional Balkan music, and rock music. He writes music
specific to the players with an approach akin to chamber music that incorporates
improvisation and allows each player to contribute to the outcome of the
composition. As a result, each piece evolves in various directions from
performance to performance. They perform regularly at NYC venues like
the Knitting Factory and the Cornelia St. Café. Most recently they split
the bill with trumpeter Ralph Alessi for a standing room only audience at
the Knitting Factoryís Old Office as part of RKM Music CD release party for
the Between Green and Ralph Alessi recordings.
Michael McGinnis is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine and
the Eastman School of Music. He has performed throughout the U.S. with
various jazz and pop artists, including the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Barry
Manilow, the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Joe Wilder, Marian McPartland, Teo
Macero and Ravi Coltrane. He is a member of the modern chamber group the four bags with whom he toured Japan in June of 2002 and has appeard live on WNYCís
ìSpinning on Airî with David Garland. He is also a member of the Matt
Glassmeyer Marching Band, the collective group DDYGG, and singer/songwriter
Allison Tartaliaís band for whom he produced the debut CD.
Drummer Mark Dodge studied music at the University of Southern Maine and
also with the late Alan Dawson. In addition to performing with Between
Green, Mark also does commercial session work for radio and television
and has performed with Clark Terry, Terrell Stafford, Dennis Irwin, and Ravi
Coltrane. He spent the last year living in Paris where he performed,
recorded and taught music. Pianist Jacob Sacks graduated from the
Manhattan School of Music and has recently released his first recording as a
leader featuring original compositions performed by his quintet. In 1999 Jacob
was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Piano Competition. Jacob has
performed with Billy Hart, Steve Slagle, and the Mingus Big Band. Shane Endsley on trumpet, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, has recorded and performed with Ani DiFranco, Steve Coleman, Art Lande, Hank Roberts,
Anthony Cox, Greg Osby, and Gary Thomas. Bassist David Ambrosio studied at the Manhattan School of Music and Queens College and has recently performed
with Kenny Werner, Mat Maneri, John Hicks, Vic Juris, George Garzone, Terry
Gibbs and Buddy DeFranco. David has also toured extensively in the United
States.
