“Pianist Steve Lantner is one of the most original improvisers to emerge in
the past several years. It’s not simply because he is always searching for
something fresh and original, but that his search uncovers more mysteries
and ambiguities than comforting certainties. It also helps that his sound is
unmistakably his own…Some of the more articulate, challenging, and
alluring music being made today.”
– Ed Hazell
ABOUT THE BOP ANTS
The Bopants are an electro-accoustic multi-media sextet with the unusual
faucet of improvised video. Drawing on influences ranging as wide as
Stockhaussen, Mingus, the Art Bears, and Howlin’ Wolf, they create dazzling,
lovely (and sometimes terrifying) canvases of sound and rapidly morphing
video collage. Noise, light, and harmony co-exist as a unified force,
improvised and orchestrated entirely in the moment of performance. The
players are:
Mitchel Ahern: plays “Lid” and other devices. Mitchel has performed on his
self-invented, electro-acoustic instrument known as the Lid since 1981. The
Lid is a vintage 30’s wringer washing machine lid mounted on a cello-like
body on which are velcro-mounted various electronic effects boxes. The Lid
is played with bow, mallets, fingertips, and an array of objects. Mitchel
has played with various groups including the Massive Sonic Organism
(MassSonics), The Judas and Natasha Experiment, and the Invented Thing
Quartet. He has performed at venues that include Trenton Avante Garde
Festival, Knitting Factory, AS220, Worcester Artist Group, The Middle East,
The Rat, and many, many galleries, coffee houses, and poetry nights.
Marc Bisson: prepared guitar, played the Blues for many years. Now he plays
guitar using various “preparations” including kitchen utensils, glass
bottles and alligator clips in order to achieve different sound textures and
colors. Marc studied with “Mission of Burma” guitarist, Roger Miller. His
influences include Keith Rowe and AMM. Marc collects books, magazines, LPs,
videos and other miscellany. He now spends his time renovating his house and
playing with various improvising musicians, sound artists, dancers and video
artists.
William Buchanan: trapset, is a North Dakota native, a self-taught and
self-styled musician, composer, artist, and philosopher. Though he studied
computer science in college and worked professionally as a software engineer
for several years, creative pursuits are his first love and forte. An avid
reader of all things interesting, he finds creative inspiration from an
interdisciplinary approach to discovering good ideas. He has performed
around the U.S. and also abroad on tours to Russia, Spain, and Greece,
playing drums and percussion in a broad range of ensembles, such as
symphonic orchestras, concert wind bands, marching bands, jazz big bands and
combos, as well as creative improvisational groups.
Katt Hernandez: F# violin, grew up in Ann Arbor, MI. She moved to Boston in
1997 and has played throughout the east coast with Joe Maneri, Zack Fuller,
John Voigt, Allisa Cardone, Brad Kemp, Jeff Arnal, Dylan Paul, Gordon
Beeferman, James Coleman, Jack Wright, Adam James Wilson, Mike Bullock, Ben
Hall, Dave Gross, El Cuerpo Exquisito, John Dierker, Hans Rickheit, Dan
Breent and Arto Artinian. She performed at the Autumn Uprising, High Zero,
Boston CyberArts and Ear Whacks festivals.
John Voigt: pogo bass, has played with Billy Bang, Borah Bergman, Peter
Brotzmann, Roy Campbell, Denis Charles, Marilyn Crispell, Andrew Cyrille,
Stu Dempster, Bill Dixon, Paul Flaherty, Bill Frisell, Malcolm Goldstein,
Milford Graves, Joseph Jarman, Keith Jarrett, Oliver Lake, Jeanne Lee, Joe
McPhee, Jemeel Moondoc, Thurston Moore, Joe Morris, Lawrence “Butch” Morris,
Paul Motian, Bern Nix, and Zenna Parkins. He has recorded for Aum Fidelity,
Eremite, Box Holder, and RRRecords (a video with Thurston Moore). Played at
Bell Atlantic, Sound Unity, Fire In The Valley, and Vision Festivals. Many
gigs at the Knitting Factory.
Walter Wright: video shredder, developed his own performance video system,
the Video Shredder, and uses it to mesmerize audiences wherever and whenever
he can. He’s getting quite good at it. His mission is to create a new music
of sound and image. He was once an unlicensed architect. He became a
computer programmer, video artist and teacher. He was an associate director
at the Kitchen in New York City, and Artist-in-residence at the Experimental
Television Center in Binghamton, NY. He is a co-founder of 911 Gallery, the
first all-digital art gallery on the web. He has performed throughout the
east coast of the USA and Canada at art galleries and museums, schools and
colleges, media centers, conferences and festivals.
