When the NAACP protested the (even then) retrograde Amos ‘n Andy television
show, White America felt it was just too damn funny to let go. By the late
60’s Julia seemed to be leaving the old stereotypes behind – but it seemed
the country still wasn’t ready for Diahann Carroll to appear opposite an
African-American male over the age of eight. Tonight Zampano acknowledges
Black History Month by screening complete 16mm prints from both of these
series as well as a few other film artifacts that bear witness to the
portrayal of African-Americans in 20th popular media. After the screening
there will be a discussion during which we will try to unpack some of the
meanings of these films.
