The Guy Mendilow Band will finish off the Zeitgeist Gallery’s 2002 Vocal
Vibrations concert series with a rich combination of vocal-oriented acoustic
world music styles. The evening is hosted by Manisha Shahane & will open
with manishamusic (featuring Manisha on voice/piano, Blake Newman on upright
bass, and Jerry Leake on tabla/multipercussion).

Multinational artist Guy Mendilow leads the debut of this band, an
eight-person ensemble of accomplished area artists. Featuring four voices,
acoustic guitars, bass, ‘cello, berimbau and drums, the group draws on an
extensive vocabulary, from Brazilian and Israeli to
Hindustani, folk, Soul and Blues, in vibrant musical storytelling awash with
warm harmonies, captivating rhythms and rollicking, fast-paced vocal
improvisations. The evening will range from Mendilow originals including
playful nonsense music, the dark, pulsing rhythms of the
berimbau, folk ballads, bossa beats and music for virtuoso overtone singing
to Mendilow’s arrangements, such as a version of a Ladysmith Black Mambazo
song reminiscent of Paul Simon. Some of this music is recorded on Guy
Mendilow’s album Soar Away Home (Earthen Groove Records 2001). The evening
will also feature music by composer Malcolm Dalglish, whose pieces for folk
choir have been described as a “playground for the voice” and a John
Renbourn arrangement of a fourteenth century traveler’s prayer.

The Guy Mendilow Band consists of Boston-based Soul/R&B/jazz vocalist,
Lillie Lewis, who recently composed the film score for the award winning
picture, “NINE;” mezzo-soprano Carrie Cheron, who combines love of
storytelling with a passion for blues and Middle Eastern music; Jerusalem
native and jazz/rock/Middle Eastern guitarist Idan Ballas, currently working
towards a degree in film scoring and contemporary writing and production at
the Berklee
School of Music; New Orleans bass man Jeff McAuliffe; eclectic baritone
singer Lyman Opie; and veteran jazz drummer Mark Nathanson, noted for his
translation of Afro-Brazilian rhythms to the drum kit.

Production: Manisha Shahane
